“AdBlue: Top Up Before Next Service” or “AdBlue Level Low”

This is a routine low-level warning. The fluid is running low but the system is still functioning correctly. Top up with quality ISO 22241 AdBlue from a reputable supplier. This warning will clear automatically once the level is restored and the engine has run for a short period.

“AdBlue: Top Up Now, Starting Impossible In X km”

The level is critically low and a no-start countdown has begun based on estimated remaining range. Top up immediately. If you reach zero kilometres on this counter without topping up, the van will not restart after the next engine off.

“AdBlue Fault” or “AdBlue System Fault”

This is distinct from a low-level warning — it indicates a component or system fault rather than just low fluid. This message requires diagnostics to identify the cause. It does not go away by topping up the fluid.

When the AdBlue fault triggers a broader engine management warning, it usually means the ECU has registered fault codes and the fault is more serious. In this state, the van may enter limp mode or restrict performance.

Don’t confuse level warnings with system faults
Topping up fixes a low-level warning. It has no effect on a system fault. If your warning returns immediately after topping up, or if you already had a full tank when the warning appeared, you have a system fault that needs diagnosing.

Quality Sensor Fault or Contaminated Fluid

If non-AdBlue fluid has entered the tank — even water — the quality sensor will detect it. On some PSA vehicles, the quality sensor itself can also fail, producing a false contamination fault even when the fluid is fine. Diagnosis is needed to distinguish between a genuine contamination issue and a faulty sensor.

SCR Catalyst Below Efficiency Threshold

On higher-mileage vans, particularly those used in stop-start delivery driving, the SCR catalyst can drop below the efficiency threshold that the ECU expects. When the downstream NOx sensor detects this, a malfunction is flagged. Catalyst replacement is expensive — this is a point where delete often becomes the more practical option.

The No-Start Countdown on Citroen Berlingos and Dispatches

PSA-group vehicles implement a no-start countdown when an AdBlue fault reaches a certain severity or when fluid level reaches critical. The countdown is measured in kilometres of remaining range or in permitted engine starts, depending on the model year and the specific fault type.

When the countdown reaches zero, the van will typically refuse to start at all, or will start and immediately go into a severely restricted operating mode. Getting the van out of this state requires specialist diagnostic equipment — the standard OBD reset approach will not work once the countdown has completed.

Act before the countdown expires
If you have a countdown showing on your Berlingo or Dispatch, get it diagnosed before it runs out. Post-countdown recovery is more complex and more expensive than dealing with the fault while the van is still running normally.

Why a Simple Reset Won’t Always Work

Clearing fault codes with a generic OBD reader is not the same as fixing the problem. If the underlying fault — a failing NOx sensor, a blocked injector, contaminated fluid — is still present, the ECU will re-detect it and the warning will return. Often this happens within the same drive or within a very short distance.

More importantly, some AdBlue system resets on PSA vehicles require manufacturer-level or specialist diagnostic software. A generic code clear will not perform the full system reset needed to properly reinstate the SCR system’s monitoring cycle. Once the fault is diagnosed, you have two main paths forward:

Repair or Replace the Faulty Component

If it’s a single component — a NOx sensor, injector, or quality sensor — replacement is usually the right first step, especially on newer or lower-mileage vans. The van remains fully road-legal with no changes to its emissions systems. After replacement, a specialist reset is required to fully clear the system’s fault memory.

AdBlue Delete

An AdBlue delete is a software modification that removes AdBlue system monitoring from the ECU, preventing AdBlue-related fault codes and no-start conditions from ever occurring again. The physical hardware stays in place.
