Dosing injector crystallisation

The most common AdBlue fault on the NV400 is a blocked dosing injector. The injector is located in the exhaust system and exposed to extreme temperatures. Urea deposits build up on the injector tip over time, restricting AdBlue delivery. When dosing drops below the required level, the ECU detects that the SCR catalyst is not receiving sufficient fluid and logs an efficiency fault code.

This fault is particularly common on NV400s used for short urban runs, where exhaust temperatures never reach the level needed to burn off residue naturally. An injector service — removal, cleaning, flow test, and refitting — resolves most cases and typically costs £150–£300.

NOx sensor failure

The Nissan NV400 No-Start Countdown

The no-start countdown is a Euro 6 compliance mechanism built into all vehicles with SCR systems. Once the ECU confirms that the AdBlue system has failed and the van is operating outside permitted emissions limits, it activates a countdown counter. The counter decrements each time the engine is switched off and restarted. When it reaches zero, the engine cranks but will not fire.

On the NV400, the countdown typically reads as “Start impossible in X starts” in the instrument cluster. The counter is stored in non-volatile ECU memory and cannot be cleared by disconnecting the battery or topping up the AdBlue tank.

Resetting the countdown

Resetting requires compatible diagnostic equipment connected via the OBD port. The technician must first repair the underlying fault and then perform the reset procedure using approved software. General-purpose OBD readers cannot perform this function.
