How the VW Transporter T6 AdBlue System Works
The Volkswagen Transporter T6, produced from 2015, uses a 2.0 TDI engine. From the T6 facelift onwards, and across all T6.1 models (2019+), the van is equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to meet Euro 6 emissions requirements. This system uses AdBlue to chemically reduce nitrogen oxides in the exhaust.
The VW Transporter is an entirely different vehicle to the Crafter. The Transporter is a medium-duty van popular with tradespeople and small fleet operators; the Crafter is a larger, heavier commercial vehicle. While they share some emissions technology concepts, the SCR components, tank layouts, and calibration differ between the two models.
The T6 SCR system includes an AdBlue tank (typically 12–13 litres), a supply pump with an integrated heating element, a dosing injector, pre- and post-catalyst NOx sensors, and the SCR catalyst itself. All components feed data to the ECU, which monitors dosing efficiency in real time.

The T6 uses two NOx sensors to monitor conversion efficiency. A failed upstream sensor causes the ECU to miscalculate dosing requirements. A failed downstream sensor causes an efficiency fault code even when dosing is functioning correctly. Either way, a fault code appears and the AdBlue warning activates. AdBlue pump and supply system faults
The T6's AdBlue pump module pressurises the supply line. Pump failures present as low-pressure codes (P20E8) or complete delivery failure. Heating element failure
AdBlue freezes at -11°C. The T6 has a heating element in the tank and supply lines to prevent this in cold weather. On the T6, a P20EE combined with P2202 usually points to the upstream NOx sensor misreporting rather than a genuine catalyst fault. A live data session with VCDS or compatible VAG diagnostics is the only reliable way to confirm this before parts are ordered.

The T6 No-Start Countdown
Like all Euro 6 diesel vehicles, the VW Transporter T6 is programmed to immobilise if the SCR system fails and the AdBlue requirement cannot be met. The countdown appears in the instrument cluster, counting down by number of engine restarts or remaining mileage.
The countdown activates after the ECU has confirmed a sustained fault — not on the first warning. Clearing the fault and resetting the countdown requires live diagnostic equipment; a battery disconnect will not help.
